1. What's special about the paint on Crimsafe mesh?
Our "Mesh Black" coating is a special formula we created in conjunction with Dulux that contains additives to actively resist buildup of dirt and impurities and assist in cleaning.
2. How big are the holes in the mesh?
Apart from its strength, Crimsafe acts as a very effective mosquito screen. The holes are 1.5mm x 1.5mm. The holes in normal flyscreen mesh are 1.5mm x 1.3mm.
3. How well can you see through Crimsafe mesh?
It depends on lighting conditions, but in general Crimsafe does not impede your view in any substantial way.
4. Does it let the breeze through?
It sure does. It lets through between 70% and 80% of the breeze, depending on the angle of the wind and the speed of the airflow.
5. Is it Pet-proof?
Yes, absolutely. Dogs, cats and birds are unable to penetrate the mesh with their claws and beaks.
6. Is Crimsafe fly-proof and mosquito-proof?
Yes, the holes in Crimsafe's Tensile Tuff Security mesh are just slightly larger than regular mosquito screen. Ours measure 1.5mm x 1.5mm, whereas standard mosquito screen is 1.3mm x 1.5mm.
7. Is Crimsafe sand fly or midge-proof?
No, but it does cut down on the number that will come inside by about 80%. And if you spray a surface insect repellant on your screens you'll increase that percentage substantially.
8. Is the mesh available in any other color besides black?
Generally not. But there's a pretty good reason why. Black absorbs light, and is non-reflective, so when you look through the mesh all you see is light that has come straight through the holes in it, making it much easier to see outside.
If the mesh was any other color at all, it would reflect that color both from the inside light, and from those rays of light outside your home that landed on the curved strands of wire and bounced inside. So you would lose a lot of the visibility and find looking through the mesh to be an experience full of glare.
9. Does Crimsafe mesh cut down the heat and light of the sun?
Yes it does. Depending on the angle of the sun, Crimsafe acts as a very effective blind whilst still allowing you an excellent view.
Crimsafe also reduces the intensity of the sun's heat. Our studies show that your Crimsafe screen can cut down on the transference of heat by up to 45%. Using a Crimsafe screen adds to the energy efficiency of your door or window.
10. How thick is the wire used in Crimsafe mesh?
We use 0.9mm Premium 304 Grade Security mesh for unsurpassed strength.
11. Why is Crimsafe so strong?
It's because Crimsafe is the only Stainless Steel Security System on the market where the mesh is screw-clampedTM to the frame to hold it tight. We hold the patent on mechanically fastening the mesh to the frame.
When hit by an impact like a kick, our system spreads the load around the whole frame and back into structure of the building, meaning Crimsafe can resist enormous impacts.
The mesh is also made out of .9mm thick Premium 304 Grade Security wire strands, and woven together in such a tight way that each strand supports the others around it.
12. How strong is Crimsafe's Tensile Tuff mesh?
Our Tensile Tuff Security mesh undergoes several hardening processes to make it stronger than ordinary steel of the same diameter. Our mesh is stronger than any of our current competitors' meshes.
13. Can Crimsafe's Tensile Tuff Security mesh be cut with a knife?
Crimsafe passes the Australian Standard Knife Shear Test, meaning the mesh conforms to the pass rating specified by the standard. However in real life, if you work at something long enough and if you have the right tools, you can cut just about anything.
The point to understand though is that Crimsafe is strong enough to resist attacks from the common cutting implements that burglars carry for a long, long time - certainly beyond the point where the criminals will give up out of fear of being caught in the act.
14. Can I use Domestic grade Crimsafe in a commercial application?
Our recommendation is not to do so. Whilst there is no difference in the strength of the mesh itself, Crimsafe's Commercial system features five times the number of screws through the mesh and the frame, and 60% thicker frames to dramatically increase the strength of the system.
Whilst the domestic system is very strong, we had to consider that in most commercial applications, it can be quite isolated and a would-be thief would have a vast amount of undisturbed time to carry out an attack on the screen. We decided that a much stronger screen would give you better protection.
Our commercial system, which was originally designed for jail and detention centre applications, was the perfect choice.
15. Do Crimsafe doors need a mid-rail?
Crimsafe doors can be made without a mid-rail, however we always recommend that you get one because it greatly increases the strength of the door and its resistance to jemmying, and aids in visually identifying the presence of the door. (The last thing you want is to try to walk through a Crimsafe door in the middle of the night or brightness of the day - it could be a rude awakening - a mid-rail alerts you or your visitors to the presence of the security screen.)
If you decide you want a Crimsafe door but you don't want a mid-rail, we recommend that you ensure your new door is fitted with a special triple-locking system designed for this application, as standard throw-locks will not resist jemmying adequately without a mid-rail.
16. Explain the Crimsafe General Warranty to me
Crimsafe Security Systems warrants you, as an owner of a Crimsafe Security Product, that it is free from defects in materials supplied by Crimsafe Security Systems under conditions of normal use for a period of 10 years from the date of installation.
Naturally, the obligation under our warranty is limited to the repair or replacement of the product or component found to be defective by Crimsafe Security Systems or our duly appointed representative.
In other words, the general warranty does not apply to any damage due to matters outside the control of Crimsafe Security Systems, including owner maintenance, failure of owner to follow the care guide, accident, alteration of the product in any way, fire, abuse, misuse and normal wear and tear.
If you have a claim to make, contact the original Crimsafe Licensee who supplied and installed the product for you, and they will arrange an inspection. You must have proof of purchase in the form of an invoice and receipt. The warranty is not transferable and you must be the original purchaser. Where the product has not been maintained in accordance with the warranty conditions, a fee to cover labour and refurbishment may apply. We honour all genuine warranty claims. The warranty covers the stainless steel mesh, door frame, paint and clamp for a period of 10 years. All moving parts such as hinges, door closers, locks, wheels and installation is covered by a manufacturers 12 months warranty.
17. Is Crimsafe made from 316 Marine Steel or 304 Security steel?
Crimsafe is made from 304 Security steel. 316 Marine Steel was designed for use in an environment of differential aeration - where part of the steel is immersed in salt water and part is in open air. In this environment, it would last a lot longer than 304 Security steel before corroding.
On land however, there is no practical difference in corrosion potential, even very close to the ocean. And Crimsafe's Tensile Tuff 304 Security steel has significant advantages over 316 Marine steel in terms of its resistance to cutting and its tensile strength.
18. What are the differences between 304 Security Steel and 316 Marine Steel?
The short answer is that small metallurgical differences in the combination of alloys that make them give 304 Security steel more strength and toughness, and give 316 Marine steel higher corrosion resistance when immersed in salt water.
You should note that irrespective of the corrosion properties of stainless steel, the high durability coating that is applied to Crimsafe makes corrosion issues for the mesh almost irrelevant as it is isolated from the environment.
You are already familiar with 304 grade steel, though you might not know it. It accounts for more than 50% of all stainless steel produced and finds its way into many, many applications. Your household saucepans, for example, your sink or your cutlery may all be made from 304 grade steel.
304 has significant strength properties. Beyond cutting your steak, it is used in different types of structures the world over because of its high strength and durability.
In fact 304 is the most demanded steel in the world because it is a fantastic all-around product.
19. Why do I need to clean Crimsafe?
Crimsafe mesh acts similarly to an air conditioner filter or a pool filter, in that it traps dirt and impurities and requires cleaning on a regular basis.
Read "How do I clean Crimsafe?" below.
20. How do I clean Crimsafe?
Regular maintenance involves a wash down of frames and mesh with Crimsafe Wash and Wax in warm water using a soft bristle brush, followed by a clean water rinse. You should clean your Crimsafe screens in accordance with this guide.
21. Does Crimsafe rust?
With the coating on Crimsafe intact, it will not rust. If it does chip off, you can rest easy knowing this fact - stainless steel has a high corrosion resistance; uncoated steel can last up to 60 years before signs of rusting
22. Is Crimsafe Fire-proof and how much heat will it reflect?
Yes, Crimsafe has been tested according to Australian Standards for fire attenuation and is recognised in the Building Code of Australia as a "Deemed to Satisfy" solution for wildfire and brushfire areas. It will reflect up to 45% of radiant heat.
23. Can I get emergency exit windows made out of Crimsafe?
Yes. We call them Safe-S-CapesTM. They allow keyless exit through windows while still maintaining heavy duty security from the outside. Safe-S-Capes come in four basic designs:
Hinged Safe-S-Capes are mounted integrally on the outside of your window and swing outwards.
Inswinging Safe-S-Capes are mounted on the inside of your window and swing inwards
24. When did Crimsafe start?
Crimsafe first started manufacturing their screw-clamped mesh in March 1996.
